      About the trip odds

It is the share of real past stays, same place, same week of the year and same number of nights, in each of 11 years (2015–2025), that had at least one hour that was dark, mostly clear and had auroras strong enough to see from there.

Because clouds are the real limit. Even under the auroral oval, coastal Norway and Iceland see long cloudy spells. Inland and dry places (Swedish Lapland, interior Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland's Kangerlussuaq) score highest.

A bit. 2015–2025 covers one full 11-year solar cycle (the quiet minimum around 2019 and the peak around 2024–2025), so the odds are a long-run average. In the far north auroras show on most clear nights in any year; further south you depend more on storms, which are more common near the peak and in the years after it.
