Will I See / Eclipse 2027

Will I see the 2027 solar eclipse?

On Monday 2 August 2027 the Moon covers the Sun completely along a 260 km wide strip from southern Spain across North Africa to Saudi Arabia. Check any place: is it in the path, how long it goes dark, at what time, and how often the sky was clear at that hour.

Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco up close

The path crosses the Strait of Gibraltar. Málaga is near the northern edge (1 min 52 s); Tarifa, Gibraltar and Tangier are near the middle (4 min 39 s, 4 min 27 s, 4 min 51 s).

Dashed line: centre of the path. Towns on the gold band see totality; tap one for its page, or tap the map anywhere.

Partial eclipse: rest of Europe and beyond

Book early, with free cancellation

Rooms and tours inside the path sell out months ahead. Book something you can cancel, then watch the forecast in the last week. Luxor (the longest totality and the clearest skies), Cádiz and Tarifa are the easiest bases. Hotel links open with the nights of 1 and 2 August filled in.

Keep your eyes safe

Before and after totality

Look at the Sun only through eclipse glasses or a solar viewer made to ISO 12312-2. Sunglasses are not enough, even at 99%.

During totality

Once the last bead of sunlight disappears, take the glasses off and look. Put them back on the moment the Sun's edge reappears.

Cameras and binoculars

Never point binoculars, a telescope or a camera lens at the partial Sun without a solar filter on the front.

How we work it out. Times and totality come from NASA's Besselian elements for this eclipse (Fred Espenak, NASA GSFC) with the standard local-circumstances method; our numbers match NASA's own tables and Spain's national observatory (IGN: Cádiz 2 min 54 s, Ceuta 4 min 48 s, Melilla 4 min 34 s) to within a few seconds. Right at the edge of the path, the Moon's mountains can shift the real line by about a kilometre. Clear-view odds: the average cloud-free share of the sky in the three hours around the eclipse, 21 July to 14 August, from NASA POWER hourly cloud data (2001–2025) corrected to match 66 airports' own weather reports (NOAA ISD, 2006–2025). NASA alone was up to 20 points too sunny along the Strait of Gibraltar and too cloudy over the UK and the Gulf, so the airports win. They are estimates from history, not a forecast. Travel advice changes: check your government's guidance for Algeria, Libya, Egypt's desert regions, Yemen and Somalia before you plan.

The 2027 eclipse: questions

Monday 2 August 2027. In southern Spain totality comes at about 10:45 local time, in Luxor at about 13:02. The partial phases start about 80 minutes earlier.

In a strip about 260 km wide: the southern tip of Spain and Gibraltar, northern Morocco, northern Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. Everywhere else in Europe, Africa and the Middle East sees a partial eclipse. Check any place.

Near Luxor in Egypt: 6 min 23 s at the point of greatest duration, the longest total eclipse visible from land until 2114. Luxor itself gets 6 min 20 s. In Europe, the longest is around Tarifa (4 min 39 s).

Málaga, yes, but only 1 min 52 s: it sits near the northern edge. Seville, no: it is just outside the path with 98% of the Sun covered, which still leaves daylight. Drive south to Cádiz or Tarifa.

Only as a partial eclipse: 42% of the Sun covered in London at 10:00 BST, less further north. For totality, southern Spain is a short flight away.

Early August is one of the clearest times of year along the path, but not everywhere. From airport weather records, the chance of a clear view at eclipse time is about 97% in Luxor, 88% in Jeddah, 82% in Sfax, 73% in Málaga, 65% in Tarifa and 57% in Tangier. The Strait of Gibraltar and the Moroccan coast carry the most risk: morning low cloud off the Atlantic and the easterly levante.

No: 99% is covered in Hurghada, so it stays light. Totality starts about 65 km to the south-west; El Quseir and Marsa Alam on the Red Sea coast and Luxor on the Nile are inside it.
